Hanley Primark change applauded as making shopping ‘safer for women’

Female shoppers at Primark can now feel safer when visiting the store in the evening, as the doors linking the shop to the Potteries Centre will be reopened. As previously reported, Primark, in Hanley, has two entrances – one outside the Potteries Centre and one inside – which shoppers can use to reach the rest of the centre as well as the multi-storey without going outside.

But the indoor entrance closed at 6pm – despite Primark being open until 7pm – leaving customers having to walk outside to reach the car park. Women have labelled the entrance closure ‘dangerous’.

The route would take them down Stafford Street and up Quadrant Street to reach the multi-store, which is fairly isolated. But now, following calls for action, the indoor doors will be open again from May 1.

The issue was highlighted by Bethan Shufflebotham, 24, who called on the shopping centre to reopen the doors after being caught out herself when shopping later in the evening. Posting on social media, she said: “Fantastic news!”

Confirming the news, Amy Whittaker, general manager of The Potteries Centre, said: “Following discussions with Primark, we are pleased to see the reopening of the link between Primark and the rest of the centre. The safety of all our shoppers is always a primary concern for us. The reopening of this link, together with our security staff who remain in place throughout the centre, will now mean that all our shoppers can feel safe accessing the store at times when it is open longer than the rest of the centre.”

Primark has been approached for comment.
